The compounds are effective inhibitors of the S. aureus enzyme because of the formation of an uncleavable tetrahedral intermediate upon binding. The electron densities unequivocally show the enzyme-catalyzed transition-state analogue mimicking that for amide bond hydrolysis of substrates.
