על גביי קרום תאי המטרה קיים
להורמון זה.
הפרשתם של גונדוטרופינים, וביניהם FSH, מתחילה בעקבות הפרשתם של הורמון-משחרר-גונאדוטרופין (GnRH) מההיפותאלאמוס והשפעתו של GnRH על בלוטת יותרת המוח.
