Is directly toxic to skeletal muscle upon local application in vivo (dystrophic effect). Also has direct nephrotoxicity in experimental mice; a single subcutaneous dose (1.38 ug/kg) produces renal tubular and glomerular damage within 24 hours (PubMed:7580101). PLA2 catalyzes the calcium-dependent hydrolysis of the 2-acyl groups in 3-sn-phosphoglycerides.
