There is a lot of confusion on the specific mechanism for the breakdown of NitroDur and which enzymes break it down, but this is what is known so far. Nitroglycerin is broken down eventually into nitric oxide. This mechanism has been found to be very complex with multiple components, so of which are clearly enzymatic, but some that are nonenzymatic. Nitric oxide is involved in numerous important systems in making our cells/bodies function and its involvement in these systems are being discovered everyday. There are also mechanisms in place in the body to produce endogenous NO, further supporting its purpose in interacting with bodily systems. Main points are that I need to figure out how the fuck it’s getting broken down into NO.
Disease
Nitroglycerin can be found in the form of tablets to be dissolved under the tongue or in the cheek and in the form of a topical ointment or a patch(http://www.cardiachealth.org/nitroglycerin-ntg). Nitro-Dur delivers nitroglycerin to the body through an acrylic patch (http://secure.healthlinks.net.au/content/msd/pi.cfm?product=mkpnitro). Nitroglycerin is commonly used to treat various conditions involving the heart. It used to increase the chances of detecting coronary artery disease when using MR coronary artery imaging (MRCA). Nitroglycerin increases the vessel length allowing coronary artery disease to be more visible under MRCA (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27731913). Nitroglycerin is also used to treat heart disease and angina which is classified as heart pain. Angina is caused by inadequate flow of oxygen and blood to the heart. To prevent this problem, nitroglycerin is used and will open up the blood vessels. Raynaud’s Phenomenon:
Raynaud’s phenomenon occurs due to vasoconstriction of the capillaries, veins, and arteries in external digits (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2860448/). Symptoms of raynaud’s involves the fingers or toes turning pale, becoming numb, and then becoming purple or blue. Patients who have been diagnosed with Raynaud’s phenomenon will occasionally need pharmacologic therapy.
