להורמון זה.
הפרשת גונדוטרופינים, וביניהם FSH, מתחילה בעקבות הפרשת הורמון-משחרר-גונאדוטרופין (GnRH) מההיפותאלאמוס והשפעתו על בלוטת יותרת המוח.
