Diversos estudos já observaram a participação da VDAC1 nas disfunções mitocondriais observadas em várias doenças neurodegenerativas e constitui um ponto de acúmulo de agregados proteícos com a Tau,β amilóide,SOD1 que estão presentes nessas patologias.Devido o envolvimento da VDAC1 no metabolismo e em processos de apoptose essa proteína se torna um possível alvo terapêutico dessas doenças.
