Ribosomal protein S1 (RPS1) is one of the 22 proteins which belong to the small subunit of the ribosome. It participates in translation initiation of many mRNAs and plays a role in translation elongation. It consists of 6 repeats of 70-residue domains able to bind single-stranded nucleic acids named OB folds. The images at the left and at the right correspond to one representative RPS1, i.e. the NMR structure of the domain 4 of the Escherichia coli ribosomal protein S1 (2khi).
