Introduction
RecA is a protein involved in homologous DNA recombination, and the SOS response in the cell. RecA is important for DNA repair
RecA Function in DNA Repair
DNA is composed to two complementary strands. When one of these strands is damaged, the cell can use the undamaged strand to fill in the missing information. RecA is involved in this type of DNA repair, called recombinational repair. When a break in the DNA arises, RecA binds to the exposed ssDNA with high affinity. RecA monomers bind together form a filament around the DNA; 6 monomers per turn of the RecA helix.
