MECDP synthase (MECPS) participates in mevalonate-independent steroid biosynthesis. It converts 2-phospho-4-(cytidine 5’-diphospho)-2-C-methyl-D-erythritol (2P-CDME) to 2-C-methyl-D-erythritol 2, 4-cyclodiphosphate (MECP) and CMP. MECPS contains metal binding sites which are required for catalysis. MECPS is a potential antimalarial drug target.
