Hp is a class I human pathogen that can survive and colonize under acidic conditions of human stomach, prolonged exposure to which can result in gastric cancers. It requires two nickel dependent enzymes - Urease and NiFe-H2ase, to colonize and survive in acidic human stomach. Essentially, the Ni-metallochaperone, UreE is required for the maturation of Urease, which catalyzes the conversion of urea to ammonia and carbamate.

''Helicobacter pylori'' (''Hp'') is a class I human pathogen that is involved in causing gastric ulcers and stomach cancers. Its two nickel dependent enzymes - Urease and NiFe-H2ase, provides it a unique ability to survive and colonize in acidic human stomach. Several accessory proteins play a crucial role in the maturation of these enzymes. UreE is specifically involved in the maturation of Urease, which catalyzes the conversion of urea to ammonia and carbamate and neutralizes the local acidic environment.
