Though there are several different families of HDACs, each with their own structural intricacies, many residues are conserved throughout them. Figure 1 shows the sequence alignment comparison of Class I HDACs. The highlighted residues show the most important structural components of both inside and outside the active site. One type of HDAC, [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDAC8 Histone Deacetylase 8], is an enzyme found in ''[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homo_sapiens Homo sapiens]''. HDAC8 decreases gene expression by increasing DNA-histone interactions, condensing the DNA tighter, into the transcriptionally silent heterochromatin<ref name="Vanninni" />.
