בדצמבר 2019 התפרצה לראשונה בסין מחלה חדשה ,התפשטה בכל רחבי העולם כולל ישראהמחלה קיבלה שם קופיד-19 ארגון הבריאות העולמי הכריז על המחלה כמגפה עולמית-פנדמיה.הנגיף הגורם למتלה נקרא sars cov 2 והוא נקרא בשם הזה בכי לאפיין אותו מנגיפים אחרים

ישנם 6 סוגים במשפחת נגיף זה המשותף ביניהם כולם מדביקים בני אדם , חלקם גורם להצטננות קלה ואחר גורם להתפרציות זיהומיות קשות כמו סארס ומירס.
