To investigate this interaction, we replaced cysteine with the more electron-donating selenocysteine. Good yields of the selenoenzyme were obtained by bacterial expression of an engineered gene containing the requisite UGA codon for selenocysteine and a simplified yet functional selenocysteine insertion sequence (SECIS).
