Function

A Disintegrin And Metalloproteinase (ADAM) are peptidases which cleave off extracellular portions of transmembrane proteins. ADAM family members are numbered.

  • ADAM10 cleaves ephrin.
  • ADAM13 details are in Molecular Playground/ADAM13.
  • ADAM17 (TACE) processes the tumor necrosis factor-α.
  • ADAM33 is implicated in asthma.
  • ADAMTS is ADAM with thrombospondin motifs.
  • ADAMTS1 has anti-angionenic activity.
  • ADAMTS4 and ADAMTS5 are involved in the degradation of aggrecan.
  • ADAMTS13 cleaves von Willebrand factor involved in blood clotting.

Disease

ADAM inhibitors are used in anti-cancer therapy. ADAM33 is implicated in asthma. ADAMTS13 cleaves von Willebrand factor involved in blood clotting.
