GFP קיים באופן טבעי במדוזה Aequorea Victoria לה הוא משמש כאמצעי הרתעה לטורפים. לחלבון זה שמושים רבים במחקר כגון סימון תאים ורקמות , מעקב אחרי תהליכים תוך תאיים ועוד. מגלי ה- GFP זכו בפרס נובל לכימיה בשנת 2008 בשל שימושיו הרבים ותרומתו העצומה למחקר .
