Carbonyl reductase (CBR) catalyzes the reaction converting R-CHOH-R and NADP to R-CO-R’ and NADPH. CBR has wide substrate specificity oxidoreductase activity. CBR has similar properties to aldose reductase and aldehyde reductase.

3D structures of carbonyl reductase

1zze – CBR – Sporidiobolus salmonicolor
3ctm – CBR – Candida parapsilosis

Carbonyl reductase binary complex with NADPH

3bhi - hCBR1 + NADPH - human
2hrb – hCBR3 + NADPH

Carbonyl reductase ternary complex with NADPH

1cyd – CBR + 2-propanot + NADPH – mouse
1wma – hCBR1 + hydroxyl-PP + NADPH
2pfg - hCBR1 + bicycle-undecane + NADPH
3bhj - hCBR1 + glutathione + NADPH
3bhm - hCBR1 + hydroxymethylglutathione + NADPH
