אלבומין הוא חלבון מסיס במים.אלבומין מצוי בדם של של בעלי חיים וגם בכל הרקמות ונוצר בכבד.אלבומין בדם חשוב לשמירת לחץ אוסמוטי תקין של פלזמה ואיזון מערכתי של נוזלי הגוף.

תפקיד האלבומין

 החלבון זה חיוני ביותר בוויסות נפח הדם על ידי שמירה של לחץ אוסמוטי.

אלבומין משמש גם כנשא העקרי של מולקולות שונות בפלזמה, ובעיקר אלה עם דרגת מסיסות נמוכה.המולקולות האלו כוללות הורמונים,מלחי מרה בלירובין, חומצות שומן חופשית, קטיונים כמו נתרן אשלגן, מגניזים, נחושת, אבץ וסידן, חומצת שתן ו אחרים. אלבומין יכול לשמש מאגר זמין של חומצות אמיניות בעיקר אלה החיוניות.

לאלבומין יש תפקיד מסוים בללכידותם של רדיקאלים חופשים.
