Function
Ferric hydroxamate uptake receptor or ferrichrome-binding periplasmic protein proteins FhuA, FhuB, FhuC and FhuD are involved in the uptake of the hydroxamate ferrichrome siderophore for use as an iron source[1].
- FhuA is the E. coli outer membrane transporter of ferrichrome and is the receptor of some phages and colicin M[2].
- FhuE is the E. coli receptor of ferric coprogen and ferric-rhodotorulic acid[3].
For more details see FhuD.
Disease
Haemophilus parasuis uses Fhu to capture iron and is the cause of the Glasser disease in pigs.
