Some strains are dependent on sialic acid for binding[1]. EBA-175 is a Plamodium ligand that binds to human erythrocytes glycophorin A in a sialic acid-dependent manner[2]. EBA-140 is a Plamodium ligand that binds to human erythrocytes glycophorin C [3]. For more details see Malaria Parasite Plasmodium falciparum Erythrocyte Binding Antigen 140. Duffy receptor is a glycogen receptor for chemicals secreted by blood cells and for Plamodium ligand [4].
