Crystal structure of a hypothetical protein from Giardia lamblia

Giardiasis or traveler's diarrhea can be fatal to the young, elderly, or immunocompromised. The Seattle Structural Genomics Center for Infectious Disease (SSGCID) has determined the structures of potential drug targets from Giardia lamblia. Some of these proteins are hypothetical proteins that share < 30% sequence identity or less to proteins with known structure. These studies are part of ongoing studies to identify proteins that could be targeted for rational drug discovery for giardiasis. The atomic resolution structure of a 15.6 kDa protein was determined by molecular replacement. The structure has the 2-layer alpha-beta-sandwich topology observed in the prototypical endoribonucleases L-PSP with conserved allosteric active sites containing small molecules from the crystallization solution. This paper is an educational collaboration between Hampton University (an HBCU) and the Seattle Structural Genomics Center for Infectious Disease (SSGCID).
