Complexin (CPLX) is the protein which binds the SNARE protein complex with high affinity. CPLX acts as both inhibitor and facilitator of vescicle fusion and neurotransmitter release at the synapse. CPLX clamps SNARE complexes to prevent vescicle fusion while in another conformation it releases the SNARE complex allowing fusion.
