I am a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology as well as in the Undergraduate Biology Department at Stony Brook University. My field of study is on HIV, specifically I study the different mechanisms and pathways that the virus utilizes to successfully exit the cell for further rounds of infection. In particular my research focuses in the study of several cellular proteins that seemed to be hijacked by the virus. These cellular proteins contribute in several cellular processes such as endocytosis, cellular signaling, calcium signaling, etc. In addition, I am interested in comparing the trafficking pathways of HIV and other retroviruses such as the chicken (ASV), mouse (MLV) and horse (EIAV) as it can highlight alternatives routes of escape. Also, I am currently teaching a research course for undergraduates students whose majors are in Biochemistry and Biology. This idea has come from the outreach program called SMART team offered to high school students (MSOE). The objectives for this course are to provide the students with a portfolio that will increase their chances of getting into a research lab in such a large institution. The course offers basic knowledge of protein biochemistry and structural biology through lectures, journal clubs and usage of computer softwares that allows the visualization of molecules in 3D (RasMol). Students then joined a research lab for couple of weeks where they model a protein of interest as indicated by the principal investigator. The final model of a protein is then printed in a rapid prototyping facility where critical information can be obtained when a physical model is observed. We are hopeful that this course will serve as a filter apparatus for Faculty members when selecting undergraduate students for research projects.
